Ge Hong (284–364 CE), courtesy name Zhichuan and self-styled Baopuzi, was a native of Jurong in Danyang Commandery, present-day Jurong, Jiangsu. He was an Eastern Jin Taoist scholar, chemist, medical scientist, and advocate of preventive medicine, a grandnephew of Ge Xuan, and was known as the Little Immortal Sage.
Microbiota transplantation can be traced back 1,700 years to the Eastern Jin physician Ge Hong and his medical classic Zhouhou Beiji Fang. The book records the use of fecal microbiota to treat disease, including Huanglong Tang for food poisoning and infectious enteritis. The approaches associated with Tu Youyou’s artemisinin treatment for malaria and Chen Zhu’s arsenic-based treatment for leukemia were also inspired by this medical classic.

The TreatGut Pharmaceutical Group Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base was approved in 2023 with establishment funding from the Fujian Provincial and Xiamen Municipal human-resources authorities. In 2025, the Group was recognized as a resident organization of the Shanghai Baoshan District Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base, creating a coordinated dual-base structure across Fujian and Shanghai.
Since the Base was approved, the Group has continuously improved its postdoctoral systems and process management, engaged stakeholders, and encouraged young researchers. Supported by the Group's strong R&D system, the Base has established a comprehensive platform for microecology research and the translation of research outcomes.
The Base will deepen collaboration with Xiamen University, Shandong University, Shanghai University, Fudan University, Peking University, and other institutions; continue recruiting outstanding postdoctoral researchers; and advance R&D and clinical applications in precision microbiota transplantation, microbial strain discovery and functional development, synthetic biology, and microecological medical big-data analytics.
